What Our Volunteer Shop Assistants Say About Volunteering For DACT

“First thing to do upon arriving in the morning is open the workshop and check the whiteboard for any messages about unfinished work the day before. If it’s cold the heater is turned on and then the air compressor, after which a fast exit is made as the compressor can take a few deafening minutes to recharge its air reservoir.
In the Mobility Shop, our manager details what’s planned for the day.
A mobility scooter service is a common occurrence using a checklist to confirm all areas are functioning correctly. Customers sometimes highlight a specific problem/fault and this needs addressing during the service. The important battery health test can take a couple of hours to complete and could need repeating if it’s thought they were not in a good charge state when handed over. Failing batteries are usually identified quicker and the customer is consulted about replacements.
Many scooter problems require a fault diagnosis, and these types of issues can be the most rewarding when a solution is found, particularly if the fault is intermittent! When the solution is a result of bringing together your knowledge, skills, past experiences, and some “outside the box” thinking, the customers gratitude is even more delightful.
Throughout the day there’s often “walk-ins” and whenever possible these are dealt with immediately. A quick adjustment of the brakes on a walker or replacing a lost nut and bolt.
The Mobility Shop offer a scooter collection/delivery service. When this is requested, we will drive the DACT van with scooter on board to/from workshop ourselves or perhaps deliver a newly purchased scooter to the customer.
At the end of the day the workshop is tidied, tools put away and any outstanding tasks written on the whiteboard.
It’s always a pleasure to spend a day in the workshop and share time with all the team.” -Bob
“My name is Malcolm, and I am a volunteer mobility scooter engineer with DACT. The reason for wanting to volunteer stems from when I retired from full time working as an electrician. I quickly found retirement boring, and I needed something to keep me occupied. Having volunteered with a few charities I eventually enquired about repairing scooters with DACT. I have been with them for around five years now. and I work two days a week and I work with a team of like-minded people.
The main enjoyment I get is from meeting, helping and advising members of the public with their mobility problems and being able to give something back to the community.
The main benefit from volunteering is doing something to keep the brain active and to provide better mobility access to those less fortunate.
Every volunteering day provides a different story, but one stands out for me. I was not on duty, but my wife (who volunteers in the shop) asked if I could go to the shop, as they had, a very distraught elderly lady who had locked her car keys inside the boot of her car. She said that she had a spare key at home. I took the lady to her remote farm, six miles away pick up the key and came back to her car. Thankfully the key worked, and the main key retrieved. The grateful lady attempted give me payment for the fuel, but I graciously declined telling her the result was the reward I got from the success of the mission!”.
